The Batman is the latest interpretation of the iconic comic book character along with famous supporting characters and the fictional city they all belong, Gotham. From the onset, I will say this interpretation is mostly accurate, mostly.

Before we get to that, let’s us review the core art of the process of filmmaking. The acting was top-notch. It was stellar. The performances in this movie was for me the main highlight. The cast really outdid themselves to portray the intentions of the filmmakers. The script was tightly written, there were hardly any filler scenes. Every scene had a purpose and naturally preceded the one before it, making every moment count. As a noir-detective movie, the suspense and big reveal all hit the right spots and did not miss at all. Now comes the dialogue. I would say first that for a superhero comic book movie, the dialogue was not damped with unnecessary jokes and quips. It was solid, every line was thick and filled with a deep human touch. They were fluid and flowed effortlessly. I loved every single word said in this movie.

As said earlier, I loved how the cast treated the materials they were given. The materials in isolation is good. However since they are adapted from the comics, the question will be if it’s interpretation was good. I said before that is was MOSTLY good. I loved how they portrayed all supporting characters. It treaded perfectly in realism and alongside it’s comic book origin. The characters of Carmine Falcone, The Penguin, Selina Kyle, James Gordon etc. were all perfectly presented. The Riddler in this movie was something else but not something bad. The Penguin is my personal favourite.

However, the concept was the main character was divisive for me. The nailed it with his extrinsic characteristics, like him being some form of urban legend or a figure of fear in the criminal underworld, the way he carries out his missions, tactics, tools etc. However, his intrinsic characteristics are what turned me off. They are his regular behavior, personal carriage and his moral values. We all know him to be a person of dual nature, that dicotomy never existed. Also his controversial and jaded moral system seemed pretty straight-jacketed and monochrome to me. Anyways, this is just one movie preceding sequels. Maybe that will be rectified in the sequels.

I love the portrayal of Gotham city. It was properly dissected and examined in all of it’s legendary rot. However, the city was not properly explored, as we only saw one side of Gotham. That, for me ruined the world building that was attempted. Anyways, we look forward for that in the sequels. The movie was a solid movie, nothing groundbreaking as advertised or revolutionary, but it was a good movie that really is worth anyone’s time. Speaking of time, the story hooks you in that it flies you by.

It will be a crime not to praise the score, cinematography and other technicalities in the movie. However, it would have been better with more lighting.
